Weekly Reflection #3
Looking back to the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry (PSII) tour.
I noticed students individually and in group settings working on their inquiry projects. I thought how the school operated was very inspiring. Initially we were briefed on how the school started by the principal and founder, Jeff Hopkins, then how each day looked for the students and the teachers. Once Jeff talked us through the school, a student joined and gave their insights into what they were doing for their project, what they plan to do, and how they enjoyed the school’s system and environment. We were then walked through the school, by that student while being able to talk to other students and teachers.
At one point many of the UVic students who attended had expressed they wished they were back in high school just to go to this school. By the end of the tour, I felt like I wanted to teach there just because of how welcoming everything and everyone was. I thought it was interesting that the upstairs was mostly group space and the downstairs portion was a creative space, providing sewing machines, music practice space, painting, etc. I think this kind of school would benefit many learners because of the self lead learning with guidance this school provides. Overall, this school is an outlet for students and I personally think this system should be more prominent in more schools.
