Weekly Reflection #2
Reflecting back to our talk on AI and on student lead learning.
I myself do not think AI should be used in school. We have been able to not use AI for longer than it’s been around. Within the higher grades schools have been seeing students use AI to cheat or to write a paper for them eliminating that critical thinking skill that is essential for day to day life. And many teachers are failing to inform the students the environmental implications that AI poses on the community and lands we reside on. I did learn from Darcy Mcnee how other forms of technology in the classroom, like using Minecraft Education to demonstrate Social Studies content, can help keep the students’ engaged.
A video on Monument Mountain Highschool showed a group of students participating in a program the students were able to design themselves. Self lead inquiry while still hitting all the points to be able to graduate. I thought this was a really cool idea to let students have autonomy in their education, but I did think that some students may take this liberty out of hand. Having students take charge of their education in my eyes helps motivate them to learn and stay engaged. I do think there should be some type of supervision to have this run smoother so more students can participate in the program.
