weekly reflection #1
Reflecting on the past two weeks, we discussed privacy, consent, and “Most Likely to Succeed.” It is important to remind students to keep themselves safe by protecting their privacy, especially now that the internet and technology has become a very prevalent topic and mode of learning in schools today. Along with teaching the student to set boundaries and turn on privacy settings, the teacher must also take their own initiative and protect themselves online. On the topic of privacy, we talked about how teachers can protect their own identity in a fun way like with Bitmoji and other character generators.
Consent follows closely with privacy in content that should be taught and followed in all grades. I learned how there are websites within Canada that protect the data that is given unlike some other websites where the data you provide can be taken and used elsewhere. Ensuring the student understands they are consenting to their information to be shared for particular applications and that some content can not be redacted.
“Most Likely to Succeed” is a documentary looking at how the delivery of content prepares students for their future. Moving from a more memorization formatted scoring system to a project based learning. I think it is very beneficial to show how students learn without the pressure of a time limit and how well they prepared for an exam. Though from the documentary, it shows how parents have their concerns regarding whether their children would move onto post secondary without the traditional grading system. I always appreciate learning more about how we can protect ourselves and our students as the school systems and environments change.
